WiFi, the international mobile internet access solution for the perceived future

Posted by Trustive on February 23, 2011

In our 2010 report, Trustive observes new trends in the way travellers access the internet. Travellers use multiple devices – these days it is not unusual to travel with 3 or more devices – and laptops are gradually being replaced by tablets and smartphones.

This new trend is therefore leading a shift in the way that data is accessed. Regular usage of multiple devices and the real risk of loosing, breaking and/or having devices stolen means that data has to be accessible directly via the net. Forget having to download files onto multiple platforms and the headache associated with the constant need to manage and synchronize local data across multiple devices, hardisks and/or USB keys. In the 21st century, data will be stored in virtual “clouds”, accessible via any device with mobile internet access.

The combination of the availability of high-speed broadband, low-cost structures and a new generation of WiFi technology all enable users to enjoy high-speed WiFi access at home and in the office. It is therefore only natural that users prefer to use the same type of high-speed WiFi internet access services when they travel abroad as well.

Due to the above-mentioned new trends in mobile internet access, it is imperative that security be reviewed, the risks inherent to the public domain being simply too great to ignore. Trustive strongly recommends designing data access security protocols independently to the devices being used. Experts and suppliers should, in Trustive’s opinion, concentrate on providing secured access to data for internal or external use. Trustive understands the complexity of this design but, for the perceived future at least, we cannot escape current user behaviour patterns and trends and, in order to safeguard data, it is thus only sensible to address this subject sooner rather than later.

As carriers move to “à la carte plans”, business nomads working for small companies will pay increasing attention to which types of network they connect to and how much such mobile internet connections cost. Increases in workforce mobility will result in an increase in WiFi usage in the coming months and years. Today’s 3G and tomorrow’s 4G will be premium services, reserved for the top echelon of travellers. However, the vast majority of travellers will rely on WiFi access whenever they are abroad.

At Trustive, we have always worked to provide a secure infrastructure for travellers to rely on, primarily by establishing secure interconnections with our 100+ operator partners and by using the latest technology to protect our systems and sites. Trustive offers travellers a low-cost mobile internet access service that includes free WiFi software to detect and connect to Trustive WiFi hotspots in just one click. That, plus of course Trustive’s free secure web browser (also accessible via Trustive’s WiFi software) both enable travellers to connect easily and with peace of mind to the world’s largest WiFi hotspot network of 180,000 WiFi hotspots in 130 countries.

Trustive’s new ‘Mobile Hotspot’ brings seamless 3G connectivity to all your favourite WiFi devices

Posted by Trustive on August 31, 2010

Some say that all good things come in little packages and the Trustive mobile hotspot is no exception! This lightweight, credit card sized, personal hotspot is the perfect travelling companion, giving Trustive customers seamless 3G internet access in 85 countries worldwide and enabling them to quickly and easily share this connection with up to 5 WiFi enabled devices (laptops, iPads, Google Phones, iPhones or any other WiFi enabled smartphones, cameras, game consoles, etc. ).

Whenever Trustive mobile broadband internet customers are not within range of a Trustive WiFi hotspot, then Trustive’s mobile hotspot is a quick and easy way of getting mobile internet access for up to 5 WiFi devices at any one time. This private and secure hotspot is delivered pre-configured for the customer’s personal use and is incredibly easy to use (with just one button – on/off), automatically connecting to Trustive’s international 3G network (available in 85 countries worldwide) and thereby providing the ultimate in wireless freedom.

Trustive’s mobile hotspot is the latest in a range of mobile internet connection solutions aimed at giving frequent travellers maximum coverage and flexibility whilst on the move. Customers may choose to share their secure mobile hotspot internet connection with their travelling companions or co-workers (up to 5 WiFi devices can be connected simultaneously), making it an ideal solution for business travellers who often need to set up a mobile office anywhere and at anytime.

Of course, the real advantage of Trustive’s mobile broadband pass is the dual nature of the service; by combining the convenient 3G internet access with WiFi access across Trustive’s network of 140,000 premium hotspots, Trustive customers are able to manage their mobile internet usage and retain complete control of the associated costs. Trustive highly recommends offloading data heavy tasks (up/downloading multimedia files, sending/receiving large e-mail attachments, watching online videos or TV replays etc.) onto Trustive’s WiFi network in order to take advantage of the ‘no download quota’ policy applicable to all WiFi sessions (WiFi sessions are charged on a per minute basis).

Christian VanGhelder, managing director of Trustive, says “Trustive’s goal has always been to provide a comprehensive, low-cost and most importantly an easy to use mobile internet access service for travellers and by removing the usual hassle and complexity associated with 3G data roaming solutions, our mobile broadband internet package combined with the new mobile hotspot really does fulfil all these criteria.”

Trustive’s new mobile broadband connection app, Easy2roam, is now available

Posted by Trustive on July 29, 2010

Easy2roam, Trustive's Google Phone app for seamless mobile internet accessTrustive’s mobile broadband customers can now enjoy wireless roaming on both Trustive’s international WiFi hotspot and 3G networks on their Google (TM) phones!

Following the launch of its new mobile broadband internet service last month, Trustive is proud to announce the launch of a new connection management for Google(TM) phones that enables Trustive’s new mobile broadband internet customers to enjoy one click access to both Trustive’s WiFi and 3G networks in 110+ countries worldwide.

Trustive’s strategy has long been to provide seamless mobile internet access to travellers via a single click (one pass with a single username and password plus a range of WiFi clients for both computers and smartphones that automate the log in process). The introduction of this new combined mobile broadband internet pass offers customers greater flexibility and increased coverage, but ease of use remains of paramount importance for Trustive.

Christian VanGhelder, managing director for Trustive explains that “ease of access has always been a prime concern of Trustive customers and that’s why Trustive has invested heavily in developing a wide range of connection tools for the most popular devices on the market. It was therefore only natural for us to extend this range of connection software in order to bring seamless WiFi and 3G access to our mobile broadband internet customers.”

Easy2roam is now available for free download from the Android Market (TM) and enables mobile broadband customers to detect Trustive networks and connect quickly and easily either via WiFi or 3G, whichever the customer chooses. As with Trustive’s WiFi passes, the new mobile broadband internet service is based on a simple billing model that offers customers maximum control and cost predictability. A purely prepaid service that gives customers complete control over their credit, no hidden costs, an easy online top-up facility and 24/7 access to their account usage in real-time continue to be the primary advantages of a Trustive mobile internet access account. Now that Easy2roam for the Google (TM) phone has been released, all of these features are just one click away for mobile broadband customers too!

Trustive’s online WiFi hotspot and 3G coverage directory gets a makeover! See the results exclusively on www.trustive.com

Posted by Trustive on July 22, 2010

Trustive's new WiFi hotspot & 3G coverage directoryTrustive’s online WiFi hotspot and 3G coverage directory recently received an exciting makeover and is now packed with extra features designed to help customers plan than mobile internet usage, and in particular their WiFi usage, in advance.

Trustive’s strategy has long been to provide seamless mobile internet access to travellers and an integral part of this strategy has been providing customers with up-to-date information about Trustive’s WiFi hotspot and 3G network so that customers can plan their journeys and WiFi usage in advance and in confidence. Recently the subject of an exciting makeover, Trustive’s WiFi hotspot and 3G coverage directory is now looking better than ever and it’s available exclusively on www.trustive.com

In the beginning, Trustive’s WiFi hotspot data was presented in a simple list format but in October 2007, Trustive launched an innovative new hotspot locator that enabled customers to immediately see the locations of all Trustive hotspots near to a given address or postcode or pinpoint the location of a specific Trustive hotspot on a map. Then, earlier this year, Trustive’s hotspot locator tool received a much needed makeover in order to give customers even greater visibility of and information about Trustive’s international WiFi and 3G networks. This was achieved by enlarging the GoogleTM Map display area as well as by providing customers’ results in a scrolling list format for ease of reference. WiFi search results can be filtered by hotspot location type (airport, hotel, bar/restaurant, marina, campsite etc.) and chain (Hilton, Radisson, Best Western, McDonalds, Starbucks etc.) and then printed off or exported for use with GPS devices such as Tomtom, Navman, Garmin and Navigon.

Trustive’s WiFi hotspot network currently includes 140,000 WiFi hotspots in 110 countries and Trustive works closely with all its partners to ensure that its hotspot database is kept constantly up-to-date; in practical terms this means an average of at least 2 or 3 database updates per week. That’s why Trustive does not share its WiFi hotspot data with any independent WiFi hotspot directory websites; instead the data is presented exclusively on www.trustive.com.

Trustive customers can also access the official WiFi hotspot and 3G coverage directory by clicking on the corresponding links on MyHotspotter for Windows, MyHotspotter for Android (Google Phone) or Easy WiFi (Trustive’s WiFi connection software for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad).

The beginning of the end for unlimited data plans!

Posted by Trustive on July 12, 2010

As expected, unlimited data plans are starting to be withdrawn from the market, with both AT&T and 02 announcing the end of such plans and the introduction of strict caps on data usage. Other mobile carriers like Verizon have also announced that tiered pricing is on the cards for their customers.

Apple have been quoted as stating that 98% of smartphone users consume less than 2GB of data per month, but with the arrival of the iPad, this is certain to change…. The iPad has a huge range of multimedia books, graphically complex games and impressive video streaming capabilities, not to mention the App Store with its range of 200,000 applications. The iPad is marketed specifically as a versatile and mobile online device and capping data usage will therefore hit the innate usability and portability of this device hard.

No-one in the industry wants customers to exceed their data usage limits and incur heavy charges. App developers are therefore starting to review their applications to make them lighter and mobile carriers are pushing WiFi to their customers.  Trustive has been working with mobile carriers like Vodafone SFR, Telefonica and Swisscom for many years in order to offload their customers’ data usage onto Trustive’s premium WiFi hotspot network; a network which includes 140,000 premium WiFi hotspots in 110 countries worldwide.

Trustive recently extended their service offering to include a combined mobile internet pass providing international WiFi and 3G data roaming access in order to provide their customers with even greater coverage and flexibility.

This rapid expansion is testament to Trustive’s commitment to continually improve the mobile internet service offered to its community of international travellers. Hotspot results can even be downloaded and imported into various GPS systems (Tomtom, Garmin, Navman or Navigon)..

Christian VanGhelder, managing director for Trustive explains that “Coverage, cost and easy access are the key concerns for travellers. We completely understand that travellers want to maintain their ‘online’ lifestyles wherever they may be. That’s why we extended our service offering to include not just a premium WiFi service, which is ideal for bandwidth heavy activities (YouTube, Facebook, multimedia file sharing etc.), but also a ‘back up’ 3G internet service for when WiFi is unavailable. With our WiFi hotspot locator, we also strive to make planning your trip and staying connected whilst you are abroad as easy and as affordable as possible.”

Shock mobile internet bill of 31,500GBP for 1 British holidaymaker!

Posted by Trustive on April 21, 2010

31,500GBP in international mobile internet (data) roaming charges – that’s what one British holidaymaker faced paying upon his return home from his relaxing holiday in Portugal!

Mr Dobsyn had used his Vodafone data card to download one episode of Prison Break and a couple of songs and thought that the resulting bill was a joke! It seems that despite being an IT worker, Mr Dobsyn – like many 3G customers – was unaware of the excessive charges levied by mobile operators for international data roaming. This case took place in early 2009 and so thankfully the EU legislation that came into force in July last year is protecting mobile internet users by forcing mobile operators to cap data roaming usage at 50 Euros. 50 Euros is a limit that can be quickly reached, especially when you use 3G services, and so Trustive highly recommends using WiFi wherever possible.

WiFi is far cheaper, faster and easier than 3G and with Trustive’s wide range of prepaid and subscription WiFi access accounts, there are no hidden charges, and more importantly for Mr Dobsyn, no download quotas!

Visit www.trustive.com for more information about Trustive’s low-cost WiFi service.
